Abstract
Modernità e decadenza non sono studiate, in questo articolo, come una coppia antitetica ma al fine di mostrare come, nella concezione di De Roberto, la modernità porti in sé i germi della decadenza. Tale concezione, che ingloba un giudizio sulla storia e sugli uomini, è profondamente pessimistica, in quanto nega l'idea di progresso materiale e morale, e tuttavia, traducendo una visione del mondo e dell'arte tipicamente "fin de siècle", fa di De Roberto un pensatore della modernità.
